Cancer doc urges cell phone precaution

A prominent cancer researcher’s warning to limit cell phone use has rekindled anew the longstanding question over mobile-phone health risks.

The media is abuzz with news of the memo from Dr. Ronald B. Herberman, director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. He sent it to faculty and staff Wednesday, saying, among other things, that children should use cell phones only for emergencies, since their developing organs are the most likely to be sensitive to possible effects of exposure to electromagnetic fields.

Herberman notes that the precautions have been reviewed by UPCI experts in neuro-oncology, epidemiology, and neurosurgery, as well as the Center for Environmental Oncology.

The tumor immunologist’s words are grabbing widespread attention both because of his professional position and because they contradict numerous studies that don’t find a link between cancer and cell phone use.

Herberman said his warning was based on early findings from unpublished data (see PDF for more).

“Recently, I have become aware of the growing body of literature linking long-term cell phone use to possible adverse health effects including cancer,” he says. “Although the evidence is still controversial, I am convinced that there are sufficient data to warrant issuing an advisory to share some precautionary advice on cell phone use.”

For anyone concerned about possible health repercussions of cell phone use, many of Herberman’s suggestions are easy enough to implement and minimally disruptive at most. Still, the topic can prove daunting to consumers. My colleague, cell phone guru Kent German, says he usually tells concerned consumers the following:

“First off, choose a phone with a low SAR (Specific Absorption Rate, a measure of the strength of the magnetic field absorbed by the body rating). CNET lists the SARs for almost all current phones in our radiation charts. Secondly, use a headset or a speakerphone whenever possible in order to maximize the distance between the phone and your body. And lastly, limit cell phone use for very young children…”

Cancer Institute Warns of Cell Phone Risks

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The head of a prominent cancer research institute issued an unprecedented warning to his faculty and staff Wednesday: Limit cellphone use because of the possible risk of cancer.

The warning from Dr. Ronald B. Herberman, director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, is contrary to numerous studies that don’t find a link between cancer and cellphone use, and a public lack of worry by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Herberman is basing his alarm on early unpublished data. He says it takes too long to get answers from science and he believes people should take action now — especially when it comes to children.

“Really at the heart of my concern is that we shouldn’t wait for a definitive study to come out, but err on the side of being safe rather than sorry later,” Herberman said.

No other major academic cancer research institutions have sounded such an alarm about cellphone use. But Herberman’s advice is sure to raise concern among many cellphone users and especially parents.

In the memo he sent to about 3,000 faculty and staff Wednesday, he says children should use cellphones only for emergencies because their brains are still developing.

Adults should keep the phone away from the head and use the speakerphone or a wireless headset, he says. He even warns against using cellphones in public places like a bus because it exposes others to the phone’s electromagnetic fields.

The issue that concerns some scientists — though nowhere near a consensus — is electromagnetic radiation, especially its possible effects on children. It is not a major topic in conferences of brain specialists…

“By all means, if a person feels compelled that they should take precautions in reducing the amount of electromagnetic radio waves through their bodies, by all means they should do so,” said Dan Catena, a spokesman for the American Cancer Society. “But at the same time, we have to remember there’s no conclusive evidence that links cellphones to cancer, whether it’s brain tumors or other forms of cancer…”

Cellphone use potentially risky for kids, teens: health agency

Toronto’s department of public health has advised teenagers and young children to limit their use of cell phones, in order to avoid potential health risks. The advisory is the first of its kind in Canada.

Officials have warned that because of possible side effects from radio frequency radiation, children under eight should only use a cell phone in emergencies, and teenagers should limit calls to less than 10 minutes.

For many years, most government health agencies were dismissive of any risk. But with more studies, a pattern is emerging that suggests people who have used their cell phones for a long period of time are at greater risk of certain kinds of brain tumors.

Dial back cellphone use, city officials tell parents

“..While scientists were pretty dismissive of any risk years ago, with the accumulation of studies, it appears people who have been using their phones for a long period of time are at greater risk of certain kinds of brain tumours. There is a pattern emerging,” said Loren Vanderlinden, a Toronto Public Health supervisor and the report’s author.

“We think it’s responsible to limit children’s exposure,” said Vanderlinden, a mother of two boys, aged 9 and 5, neither of whom carries a cellphone. “Generally, calls should be limited to five or 10 minutes.”

Children have smaller heads and thinner skulls than adults. Some studies, using computer image modelling, show signals radiate farther into children’s heads than adults. And because children today begin using cellphones at an earlier age than any other generation, exposure will be far greater over their lifetimes…

Cellphone radiation affects cells in living humans

RADIATION from cellphones is too weak to heat biological tissue or break chemical bonds in cells, but the radio waves they emit may still affect cell behaviour.

“Our study suggests that it is possible that mobile phone radiation alters the expression of some proteins in living humans,” says Dariusz Leszczynski at the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority, in Helsinki.

Leszczynski exposed 10 female volunteers to radiation at 900 megahertz from GSM phones to simulate an hour-long phone call. Mobile phone radiation might alter protein expression in human skin

Abstract:

Background

Earlier we have shown that the mobile phone radiation (radiofrequency modulated electromagnetic fields; RF-EMF) alters protein expression in human endothelial cell line. This does not mean that similar response will take place in human body exposed to this radiation. Therefore, in this pilot human volunteer study, using proteomics approach, we have examined whether a local exposure of human skin to RF-EMF will cause changes in protein expression in living people.

Results

Small area of forearm’s skin in 10 female volunteers was exposed to RF-EMF (specific absorption rate SAR = 1.3 W/kg) and punch biopsies were collected from exposed and non-exposed areas of skin. Proteins extracted from biopsies were separated using 2-DE and protein expression changes were analyzed using PDQuest software. Analysis has identified 8 proteins that were statistically significantly affected (Anova and Wilcoxon tests). Two of the proteins were present in all 10 volunteers. This suggests that protein expression in human skin might be affected by the exposure to RF-EMF. The number of affected proteins was similar to the number of affected proteins observed in our earlier in vitro studies.

Conclusion

This is the first study showing that molecular level changes might take place in human volunteers in response to exposure to RF-EMF. Our study confirms that proteomics screening approach can identify protein targets of RF-EMF in human volunteers… (continues)

Experts Revive Debate Over Cellphones and Cancer

Last week (of 3 June 2008), three prominent neurosurgeons told the CNN interviewer Larry King that they did not hold cellphones next to their ears. “I think the safe practice,” said Dr. Keith Black, a surgeon at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, “ is to use an earpiece so you keep the microwave antenna away from your brain.”

You may have heard mixed reviews of whether cell phones are harmful or not and I want to explain why you should expect this…

You see there is a huge multi-billion dollar industry that has been setup whose revenue depends on your confidence in wanting to use your cell phone without hesitation.

If these devices were truly safe I think all the studies would have verified this. The situation can be simplified:

1. Many people, yourself possibly included, find that they get headaches and discomfort when talking on a cell phone - for some folks it is only on long calls while others get reactions from even a quick call.

2. Many heavy cell phone users have openly complained that their newly formed brain tumors are (1) positioned right where their cell phone were held next to their ear (same side of the face) and (2) shaped very consistently with the antenna of a cell phone (see George Carlo’s book ‘Cell Phones Invisible Hazard of the Wireless Age‘).

3. Cell phone towers have been documented to affect bird migration. While industry execs and their scientific advisory boards seem to insist that this is a result of blinking lights on these towers, this is unlikely. There are all forms of blinking lights in nature like twinkling stars and fire flies. Migration patterns, like that of whales versus sonar signals, have never been thrown off until the installation of microwave infrastructures.

Maybe you’ll agree with me that you should be concerned with this issue - and that while many people are asking ‘Are there health dangers from using a cell phone?’ the more appropriate question to ask is ‘What are the health dangers from using a cellphone?‘

Colony Collapse Disorder Honey Bee Research

I’ve done a little research on the problem with colony collapse disorder. There may be a connection between chemtrails and the failing health of bees.

First please examine the data from rense.com per a recent air quality test of chemtrails:

However, manganese is also a toxic element. This element is the black electrolyte material found in batteries (dry cell types) before the advent of alkaline batteries took over the battery market.

Manganese is still used in cheap batteries and commonly provided with remote controls.Barium, copper and zinc are also heavy metals. Copper and zinc are used by the human body’s metabolism but only in very small amounts. Barium is a common contrast agent used for X-ray diagnostic imaging, but it is not used in powder form. It is suspended in a liquid form for contrast enhancement of X-rays to outline digestive tract soft tissue.

Barium and aluminum (more on aluminum later) are commonly found in chemtrail fallout. These two compounds were also described by Dr. Teller in his weather modification paper as two possible agents that could be spread by aircraft into the upper atmosphere. Investigation of the use of honey bees and honey bee products to assess heavy metals contamination:

Experiment was carried out using 12 colonies of honey bees bred in hives located near an extraurban crossroad. We analyzed the Pb, Cd and Zn deposited on the bee’s surfaces and the heavy metal accumulation in the foragers, dead bees, honey products and some environmental markers during nine weeks of the experiment.

Results showed a large amount of Zn and Cd on the bee’s surface as a consequence of atmospheric fallout, whereas Pb seems to be either water-extractable and/or likely accumulated in the body of the insect.

Dead bees expelled from the hives displayed a progressive accumulation of all heavy metals during the experimental period. Royal jelly and honey contained large amounts of heavy metals. In particular, we found a linear relationship between Cd in the honey and that found in flowers of Trifolium pratense L.

Results obtained suggested that honey bee products and the examined environmental markers may be considered useful parameters to assess the presence of environmental contaminants, whereas the measurements of heavy metals in the dead bees may be considered a suitable tool also to verify a possible dynamics of accumulation of pollutants….

This data indicates that honey bees are the most sensitive to pollutants, in particular, heavy metals in the environment.

Microbiologists discovered a while back that different strains of pseudomonas can be derived when subjected to different environmental conditions. What if a strain similar to 5-x has found a way into the bees? According to a few other articles at rense.com, hazardous pseudomona strains have already been found in chemtrails.

According to the first two articles above, the best indicator of environmental heavy metals are the honey bees and their hives.

Hypothesis: What if the mechanism of heavy metal absorption from chemtrails into bees is through pseudomonas (heavy metal absorbing strains), thereafter, their immune systems are weakened allowing (varroa) mites to attack to make it look like natural causes?

The proof would be the presence of these artificially derived pseudonomas from chemtrails that can infect bees. Pollinating flowers are also particularly receptive to environmental pollutants. (I haven’t even touched on the possible consequences of GMO infections yet!) But flowers affected by environmental pollutants might actually be hurting the bees. The bees may actually be our virtual “canaries in the cave” foretelling of hidden dangers.

A researcher from another group made an interesting point about this chemtrail action on bees being on purpose:

“I wonder if poisons in chemtrails like bromine and even added these suggested heavy metals could be an even worse bee irradiation/reduction process? The would induce a massive price increase in food and thus more world starvation on an evil/painful population reduction agenda? Take the bees out of the picture and no pollination! The only ones with food would be those with stored seed banks like the one discovered in Norway. No doubt they are storing some bee hives there to reboot these crops protected in mountain vaults from genetics,biological, asteroid hit, and poisons… “

Microwaves have been implicated in causing colony colapse disorder. What if it’s not just the microwaves, but the heavy metal reaction to microwaves since they are absorbed by certain pseudomonas in the bees, thus using the same concept as the Kanzius machine which heats up metallic nanoparticles using radio waves?

If that Bioemitter by Global Bioenergetics actually emits the MORs (mortal oscillatory rates) for pseudomonas, then couldn’t everyone with Rife type emitters do the same? (i.e. hinging on heavy metal absorbing pseudomonas as the culprit)

It’s possible that this is the normal mechanism that makes the bees so sensitive to heavy metal pollutants. Perhaps, we have the same reason old time miners used to take canaries into caves with them since they would be the first ones to die in a hazardous atmosphere. Now, colony collapse disorder is indicative of the state of our environment.

FAN Fluoride Newsletter

1) NEW VIDEO: An Environmental Professional Speaks Out on Fluoride

This week, the Fluoride Action Network (FAN) launched the latest video in its “Professional Perspectives” series on water fluoridation. The video is short (just 5 minutes) and features Brent Foster, an environmental attorney and State Conservation Chair of the Oregon Sierra Club. Foster explains why he went from being a onetime proponent of fluoridation to spearheading a successful statewide effort to defeat mandatory fluoridation in Oregon, and how he was able to get the support of the only doctor, dentist, and nurse in the Oregon legislature. 2) Kidney Foundation Drops its Support of Fluoridation:

A new position paper from the National Kidney Foundation concludes that individuals with chronic kidney disease should be notified of the potential risk from exposure to fluorides. The document acknowledges gaping holes in research concerning kidney impacts from fluorides, and thus further undermines the myth that fluoridation has been proven safe for everyone. In addition to advising that kidney patients be notified of their vulnerability to fluoride, the Kidney Foundation officially withdrew from the American Dental Association’s list of organizations which support fluoridation. 3) List of Communities Rejecting Fluoridation Grows Larger
The number of communities rejecting fluoridation continues to grow. On April 1, Quebec City in Canada terminated its fluoridation program after 36 years, thus joining the ranks of other major Canadian cities - such as Montreal and Vancouver - which do not fluoridate their water. Another major victory occurred on the Isle of Man in Europe when the Health Ministry announced on June 12th that it was abandoning its attempt to fluoridate water after a government survey showed the public opposed to the plan. Other communities recently rejecting fluoridation include Dryden, Ontario; Littleton, Massachusetts; and Yarmouth, Massachusetts. In Dryden, voters rejected a fluoridation proposal by a 7-to-1 margin!

4) City that Gave Birth to Fluoridation is Having Second Thoughts

In 1945, Grand Rapids, Michigan became the first city to ever fluoridate its water. Now, 63 years later, some city officials in this town are beginning to wonder whether they should join the growing tide of cities and towns rejecting fluoridation. As noted in an a June 23 article from the Chicago Tribune,

“the chemical widely credited with dramatically cutting cavities and promoting oral hygiene, is having its scientific credentials questioned in the city that literally swallowed it first… [T]he push here mirrors a spreading nationwide awareness and re-examination of the health impact of a wide variety of chemicals added to food, health-care products and water.”

While the victories above are encouraging, proponents of fluoridation continue their relentless push to, quite literally, shove fluoride down people’s throats. Of particular concern are renewed attempts to pass mandatory fluoridation bills at the statewide level in the US. Sadly, in April, the legislature in Nebraska (with virtually no public input) passed one of these bills, thereby requiring every town with at least 1,000 residents to fluoridate their water. A similar bill has also just been quietly fast-tracked through the Louisiana legislature. We still have a chance, however, to prevent this tragedy from happening. Trouble Maker: GMO seeds cannot be removed

Scientists in Sweden found genetically engineered canola plants springing up in a test field 10 years after engineered seeds were originally planted—despite efforts over time to clear the field of transgenic plants. The canola plants were engineered to tolerate the herbicide glufosinate. In the years following the canola planting, the field was plowed and used to grow wheat, barley, and sugar beets, and farm staff routinely searched for and removed canola plants. Yet after a decade canola plants were still sprouting in the field. The persistence and dispersal of genetically engineered plants into the environment is one of the serious problems with this technology, and may contribute to contamination of conventional crops. Earth Day Remembers North Pacific Trash Gyre

On this particular Earth Day, it’s most important for “civilised” people like ourselves to take note of evils we don’t see everyday, yet affect us on a daily basis.

The North Pacific Trash Gyre is one of those out of sight, out of mind evils that we cause chronic health ailments in everyone who enjoys seafood and every living creature who has ever lived off the Northern Pacific Gyre as a food source.

Consider the food chain wherein pets, farm animals, livestock, and agricultural products are fed seafood by-products from this hideous trash pool. We may not be able to see it very clearly, but there’s no way of escaping from it.

Below is a recent article written for Good Times Weekly, Santa Cruz, California, of which I provide an extract. On this Earth Day, it’s important for us to consider the consequences of our attitudes and actions when using throw away plastics.

The Return-on-Investment just doesn’t add up. No matter how cheap the plastic product is to make or recycle, the toll on life for this entire planet is just too great. A decadent, “throw away” culture is simply not sustainable - on any planet.

Trash twice the size of the continental United States is collecting in the North Pacific, but here’s the kicker: most of it is made to last forever.

One sunny day 10 years ago, Captain Charles Moore was sailing home from a yacht race in Hawaii when he steered his boat off-course in search of a little adventure in the North Pacific. Heading north in his 50-foot catamaran, Alguita, Moore wanted to graze the lower Eastern corner of a rarely sailed region, the North Pacific subtropical gyre, before making his way home to Long Beach, California.

The most remarkable characteristic of the gyre, a 10-million-square-foot, clockwise-churning vortex of four converging ocean currents, was supposed to be its unique weather pattern. It’s a high-pressure area, meaning that warm air hovers over it. The air is still. There’s no wind. Picture an immense oceanic desert. Frustrated sailors long ago christened the area “the doldrums” and avoided it, as do predatory fish who find no prey within its calm, nutrient-lean depths. “It almost looks like an oil slick, or like a mirror. It’s really beautiful, the phenomena of a very smooth ocean,” says researcher Dr. Marcus Eriksen.

But as Moore ventured into the gyre, his fascination with weather patterns gave way to a different reaction-alarm. In this most remote part of the ocean, his expectation of the pristine was met by blight. A vast array of trash-bottle caps, plastic bottles, fishing floats, wrappers, plastic bags and fragments, many tiny plastic fragments-stretched before Moore as far as the eye could see. Method of Detecting Plastic in Solution

The Tyndall effect is the effect of light scattering on particles in colloid systems, such as suspensions or emulsions. It is named after the 19th century Irish scientist John Tyndall. The Tyndall effect is used to tell the difference between the different types of mixtures, namely solution, colloid, and suspension. For example, the Tyndall effect is noticeable when car headlamps are used in fog.

The light with shorter wavelengths scatters better, thus the color of scattered light has a bluish tint. This is also the reason why the sky looks blue when viewed away from the sun: the blue light from the sun is scattered to a greater degree and is therefore visible far from its source. This effect occurs because short wavelengths of light towards the blue end of the spectrum hit the air molecules in the earth’s atmosphere and are reflected down to the earth’s surface. Longer wavelengths towards the red end of the spectrum are less affected by the particles and pass on through the earth’s atmosphere.

Penetrating Radar (PenRad), technology invented by Stanford Research Institute, should have the sensitivity for detecting these shorter wavelengths and beyond into the ultraviolet range within the North Pacific Gyre’s plastic soup.

PenRad could probably take excellent satellite videos as well as stills of the trash gyre at any depth. The question remains: Is SRI willing to devote their equipment to finding evidence to implicate industries that hinge on their own (plastic, waste disposal, etc.)?

OK, it looks like #3, #6, and, perhaps, #7 disposable plastics are the troublemakers. Let’s take a closer look at their application and composition as extracted from the following article: Plastic Containers - What to look for

Here’s a quick breakdown of plastic resin types:

#1 polyethylene terephthalate (PET or PETE)
Product examples: Disposable soft drink and water bottles, cough-syrup bottles

#2 high density polyethylene (HDPE)/
Product examples: Milk jugs, toys, liquid detergent bottles, shampoo bottles

#3 polyvinyl chloride (V or PVC)
Product examples: Meat wrap, cooking oil bottles, plumbing pipes

#4 low density polyethylene (LDPE)
Product examples: Cling wrap, grocery bags, sandwich bags

#5 polypropylene (PP)
Product examples: Syrup bottles, yogurt cups/tubs, diapers

#6 polystyrene (PS)
Product examples: Disposable coffee cups, clam-shell take-out containers

It just so happens that #3 polyvinyl chloride, #6 polystyrene, and #7 polyactide are photosensitive, therefore, easiest to decompose into the plastic soup that makes up the North Pacific Trash Gyre.

Fortunately, polyactides are made from corn, potatoes, sugar cane and anything else with a high starch content rather than all the petroleum based plastics as state above - and was created to decompose quickly and safely. Therefore, #3 and #6 plastics are still the biggest troublemakers even when instituting the polymer energy conversion program.

#3 PVC

#3 polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is often used frequently in cling wraps for meat. However, PVC contains softeners called phthalates that interfere with hormonal development, and its manufacture and incineration release dioxin, a potent carcinogen and hormone disruptor. Vinyl chloride, the primary building block of PVC, is a known human carcinogen that also poses a threat to workers during manufacture.

#6 PS

Extruded polystyrene (#6 PS; commonly known as Styrofoam) is used in take-out containers and cups, and non-extruded PS is used in clear disposable takeout containers, disposable plastic cutlery and cups. Both forms of PS can leach styrene into food; styrene is considered a possible human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. It may also disrupt hormones or affect reproduction.

#7 PC

#7 Polycarbonate (PC) is found in baby bottles, 5-gallon water bottles, water-cooler bottles and the epoxy linings of tin food cans. PC is composed of a hormone-disrupting chemical called bisphenol A, which has been linked to a wide variety of problems such as cancer and obesity.

  • Polyvinyl alcohol, has caused cancerous tumors in lab animals.
  • Butylated hydroxytoluene may be linked to a spectrum of symptoms including asthma, gene mutations and cancer.
  • The little-studied 1,2-benzisothiozolin-3-one, a germicide, is considered highly toxic to green algae and marine invertebrates, according to a 2005 EPA re-registration document.And remember, treatments are not one-time events; they will be reapplied at 30- to 90-day intervals while the moths are active.

    Reducing Electromagnetic Noise Exposure

The amount of EM noise that a person experiences from a computer eight hours a day is now negligable in comparison to the overall effects of today’s proliferation of EMF.

    The proliferation of microwave communications (e.g. WiFi) and the invasion of the airwaves of every frequency band available like cellphone technologies, exotic radio transmissions, and power lines exposes every person in civilised society to EM noise; it’s virtually unavoidable unless you live and work in a faraday cage of some kind. The article even states that anyone on this planet would find it difficult to not be exposed to some sort of EM transmission.

    What I find of particular interest in this article is the mention electrically sensitive people. Here is an extract:

    Ask those who have become “electrically sensitive” (ES), people who now experience a wide range of symptoms upon exposure to even low levels of EMF radiation and have a most difficult time finding a place to live safely in our wireless age.     Why are we attracted to big egos?

    There’s an ego attached to everyone including every authority figure. Each of those authority figures has a much bigger ego than anyone around him; this includes medical doctors.

    Medical doctors can have egos that are beyond any professional wrestler. Pro wrestlers don’t hire gunmen to enforce their dogma on innocent people. Yet, this is the way it is, now; medical doctors have such huge egos because of their status that they have children taken away and parents arrested if we don’t agree with the medical dogma.

Now, a panel of child health experts has issued a report warning of fluoride’s potential to damage a child’s developing brain. Despite these developments, a bottled water company continues to aggressively market fluoride-spiked water for infants, and Health Agencies continue their relentless push to fluoridate more water supplies. In case you missed it, these are some of the fluoride headlines that surfaced this month, which we summarize below.     FAN’s Fluoride Headlines for February 2008

    1) Fluoride: A Threat to the Brain

    On February 20th, a distinguished panel of experts convened by the Institute of Children’s Environmental Health released a consensus statement summarizing “the latest science about environmental contaminants associated with neurodevelopmental disorders, such as learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), intellectual disabilities and developmental delays.” Fluoride was one of the environmental contaminants reviewed by the scientists. According to the report:

    “Excessive fluoride ingestion is known to lower thyroid hormone levels, which is particularly critical for women with subclinical hypothyroidism: decreased maternal thyroid levels adversely affect fetal neurodevelopment. In addition, a study in China reported decreased child IQ levels associated with fluoride in drinking water. The question is what level of exposure results in harmful effects to children. The primary concern is that multiple routes of exposure, from drinking water, food and dental care products, may result in a high enough cumulative exposure to fluoride to cause developmental effects… It is not clear that the benefits of adding fluoride to drinking water outweigh risks of neurodevelopment or other effects such as dental fluorosis.”

    2) The Nursery Water Scandal: Company Continues to Market Fluoride for Babies

    While prominent child health scientists are beginning to address fluoride’s risks to the brain, a bottled water company (Nursery Water) continues to aggressively market fluoridated water for infants under the age of 1. The company continues to market this product despite the fact that the American Dental Association - the nation’s most prominent promoter of fluoride - has advised that babies not receive fluoridated water. In February, the tireless Environmental Working Group (EWG) issued a complaint about Nursery Water’s actions to the Food & Drug Administration and Federal Trade Commission. According to EWG, Nursery Water is violating the law by contradicting FDA’s own ruling that bottled water companies can not make claims that fluoridated water benefits babies. As noted by Jane Houlihan, EWG’s Vice President for Research: “Nursery Water’s behavior is completely irresponsible. They are misleading parents, misrepresenting the facts, and placing profits above the health of babies.” To learn more, click here

    3) “Poisoned Horses”: New Video Documents Fluoridation’s Effects on Horses

    Dr. David Kennedy, from the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT), has posted a new video on YouTube titled “Poisoned Horses.” Horses are much larger than canaries but in the case of fluoride toxicity they may prove to be an ideal canary for what fluoride might do to humans. Why? Because horses drink a huge amount of water each day. This video documents what happened to Cathy and Wayne Justus’ quarter horses after their community in Colorado began fluoridating its water. The horses developed severe dental fluorosis; arthritic pains typical of skeletal fluorosis; abnormalities of the hooves; dermatological reactions; behavioral changes; and colic.     4) UK Under Attack… Hawaii, Pennsylvania and Australia too

    Unlike the United States, the vast majority of western Europe has rejected water fluoridation. For instance, whereas over 60% of Americans have tap water that is fluoridated, the respective figure in Europe is less than 3%. Nevertheless, health officials in England have recently announced a new plan to try and force more water supplies in England to start adding fluoride. A similar attempt recently in Scotland was overwhelming rejected, so let us hope for a similar result in England.

    It’s not just England, however, that’s under siege. Here in the US, health officials have indicated a renewed desire to fluoridate Hawaii (even though Honolulu passed a resolution a few years ago banning water fluoridation). In addition, legislators in Pennsylvania and Nebraska are trying to mandate fluoridation in their respective states, and across the globe in Australia, the parliament in Queensland is trying to institute a massive expansion of fluoridation as well. Citizens in all areas are vigilantly fighting back - as demonstrated nicely in this letter from a Pennsylvania dentist and in this video of a demonstration in Australia.     5) Don’t Swallow Your Toothpaste!

    The Times in England writes: “Toothpaste causing bad teeth? It seems illogical, particularly since dentists so fervently urge us to use it. But many parents are unaware of the potential risks of letting children under 7 swallow fluoride toothpaste, especially in fluoridated areas, where they are already receiving a background dose of the chemical.” To learn more about why parents need to be vigilant about not letting their child swallow toothpaste, click here

    6) And now for some GOOD NEWS..

    In February, several communities rejected plans to fluoridate water, including Manilla, California, Ocean Springs, Mississippi and Welland, Ontario; and a councilwoman in Fairbanks, Alaska has put forth a resolution for Fairbanks to follow the lead of Alaska’s capital city (Juneau) and remove fluoride from its water. In addition, over 150 more health and medical professionals have added their name to FAN’s Professionals Statement to End Water Fluoridation - bringing the current total of signers to over 1,500. And thanks to the nearly 10,000 concerned citizens who have signed FAN’s Online Letter to Congress, Congressional representatives are becoming increasingly familiar with this Statement.
