Health Warning: Plastics in Food and Water
27. May 2009 by HealingMindN.
Here is a warning from a neurotoxicologist that diet soda in cans that have been left unrefrigerated and heated to above 90 degrees result in the transformation of some of the contents into formaldahyde.
Read on…
From: Terry Donnenwirth
Dangers of Plastics with Foods and Water
Water in your car is very Dangerous!
On the Ellen show, Sheryl Crow said this is what caused her breast cancer. It has been identified as the most common cause of the high levels of dioxin in breast cancer tissue.
Sheryl Crow’s oncologist told her: Women should not drink bottled water that has been left in a car. The heat reacts with the chemicals in the plastic of the bottle which releases dioxins (and bromines) into the water.
Dioxin is a toxin increasingly found in breast cancer tissue. So please be careful and do not drink bottled water that has been left in a car. Pass this on to all the women in your life.
This information is the kind we need to know that just might save us! Use a stainless steel canteen or a glass bottle instead of plastic!
This information is also being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center
No plastic containers in microwave.
No water bottles in freezer
No plastic wrap in microwave.
A dioxin chemical causes cancer, especially breast cancer.
Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies. Don’t freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic. Recently, Dr. Edward Fujimoto, Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital, was on a TV program to explain this health hazard.
He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us.
He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers..
He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastic releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body…
Paper isn’t bad but you don’t know what is in the paper.
I need to make special note of the treatment of Dr. Fujimoto’s research. There are “sources” on the web such as snopes, authored by one person, which is considered an authority on dispelling scientific myths. I looked at the snopes site and it’s completely bent against anyone who says that people are slowly getting poisoned by careless industrial practices. I decided to look for a site which “specializes” a little more in the area of plastics, yet disagrees with Dr. Fujimoto.
Here is an excerpt from an article which stamps Edward Fujimoto’s research as “baloney” from Plastic Myth Buster
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
The claim that plastic food wraps and containers can release dioxins in the microwave oven is misleading. First, the vast majority of plastics used in food wraps and packaging containers do not contain the chemical constituents that can form dioxins. Second, dioxins are a family of compounds that are produced by combustion at high temperatures. They can only be formed during combustion at temperatures typically above 700 degrees Fahrenheit. In other words, even if all of the constituents were present, you also would need to have a very hot fire in your microwave oven, in which case you probably wouldn’t eat the food anyway…
Now, here’s an excerpt from Wikipedia on polychlorinated dibenzodioxins (dioxins for short):
Dioxins are produced in small concentrations when organic material is burned in the presence of chlorine, whether the chlorine is present as chloride ions or as organochlorine compounds, so they are widely produced in many contexts. According to the most recent US EPA data, the major sources of dioxins are:
- Coal fired utilities
- Municipal waste incinerators
- Metal smelting
- Diesel trucks
- Land application of sewage sludge
- Burning treated wood
- Trash burn barrels…
These sources together account for nearly 80% of dioxin emissions…
Please keep in mind that these are the MAJOR sources. Plastics as containers for food cooked in microwave ovens is not mentioned here. Who wants to implicate industrial cash cows like microwave ovens and plastic? No one.
Let me ask you. Which information is more scientifically complete? That article at Plastic Myth Busters or the Wikipedia page? I say Wikipedia. Here we see it’s obvious that dioxins are natural to this planet like a lot of poisons, but dioxins occur a lot more in people who live in industrialized nations exactly because of dark age, life negative industrial technologies which produce lots of poison.
As it says at Wikipedia, dioxins are widely produced in many contexts. In a microwave oven, we place organic material in the form of food which may contain chlorine if that food was processed with chlorinated water.
If you’re using a polycarbonate container (#7), then you have to consider another organic source, Bisphenol A (BPA), an organic compound, a building block of several important plastics and plastic additives. (More info on plastics at Earth Day Remembers Pacific Trash Gyre.)
Since we’re on the subject, we might as well point out the type of plastic which is usually used in microwaves: Polypropylene. This plastic is heat resistant.
Of course, the plastic industry wants you to be safe by making the plastic you put in your microwave resistant to combustion, so they inject bromines into the plastic to make it flame retardent. Unfortunately, bromines are yet another carcinogenic compound that leech out in the presence of water and heat. Yuck. Personally, I’d prefer that plastic container to go up in smoke along with my dinner.
Here’s more on the dangers of these plastic additives.
Do we actually need 700 degrees F. to produce dioxins? According to the Wikipedia page, we only need to “burn” the correct ingredients in the presence of each other. Burning is the process of putting in excess energy; heat is only one type of energy. Microwaves are another type of energy.
Can microwaves burn things? Of course they can! The US Navy proved it when they were zapping seagulls in flight with 300 watt microwave transmitters.
Microwaves create heat through vibration at the molecular level, mainly of water because its polarized. There are also other polarized molecules such as protein strands and B vitamins which are vibrated and destroyed in microwave ovens, but this is another subject.
Suffice it to say that microwaves provide excess energy, enough to produce dioxins. Most people are putting in all the necessary ingredients to produce those dioxins into their microwave ovens.
Now, you’re probably asking how sunshine on plastic water bottles causes “excess energy.” It doesn’t The Ultraviolet light in sunshine breaks down plastics. This has already been proven by the existence of the Pacific Trash Gyre.
Now, which article is clear and to the point? The one that says “baloney,” am I right? For most people, the “baloney” article is clear, concise, gets straight to the point and only takes a few seconds to read. Obviously, the “baloney” article is the type that most people opt to read and accept as gospel. I assume that you’re better than that because you’re here. Thanks and please continue.
It’s just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc. He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is one of the reasons…
Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Saran wrap, is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food. Cover food with a paper towel instead. You get the same results, only without the dioxin.
So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else…
This is an article that should be sent to anyone important in Your life! Thanks for your time.

No Uranium Mining in the Grand Canyon!
11. May 2009 by HealingMindN.

Don’t Let Uranium Mining Destroy the Grand Canyon’s World-Famous Vistas!
|
Along the Grand Canyon’s south rim, the old Orphan uranium mine still oozes radioactive waste into the surrounding soil and water - water that feeds into the Colorado River. Will new mines along the Grand Canyon also end up as abandoned Superfund sites, leaching hazardous waste into our drinking water?
We need you to take action to stop plans to mine more than 1 million acres around the Grand Canyon >>
Before he left office, Bush-era Secretary of the Interior Dick Kempthorne ignored scientists and Congress and authorized this destructive uranium mining plan. Soaring uranium prices have led mining companies to stake more than 10,600 claims on federal land - right along the Colorado River.
We can’t let this uranium mining destroy the Grand Canyon! The mining would threaten the drinking water for 30 million people living in the western United States and could devastate tourism, which generates more than half a billion dollars for the economy.

ACID MINE DRAINAGE: FOCUSING ON THE PROBLEM OF MINING WASTES
Just in case you’re not exactly clear on what is being done with uranium besides stockpiling nukes, here are a few reminders:
Depleted Uranium
:
poison consumer reports latest poisoning - Depleted Uranium is silently killing tens of thousands of soldiers and millions of civilians in the middle east.
Recycling Radioactive Metal into Jewelry and dinner ware
:
Legislators call it ‘a necessary risk’ to harbor nuclear waste, but how many of you know that radioactive metal is sold overseas, recycled into everyday items, and resold back into the U.S. to give us another dose of radiation?
