Nutrition Spectrum is at half mast

Nutrition Spectrum is undergoing a complete overhaul. I had spent eight years with VitaCost and the good doctors of NSI since I had my site at health shopper.net. The foundation of Nutrition Spectrum was VitaCost.

When VitaCost marketing decided to pull the plug on the affiliate program on 1 Feb 2008, it was the equivalent of a building inspector saying that all the plumbing is bad and it has to be ripped out of this eight story building. Even if it was just a one story building, there’s no way of doing that without making a giant mess - so pardon my dust.

I’m doing my best right now to replace eight years of VitaCost plumbing with Puritan Pride and Vitamin World plumbing, but it’s not easy since the VitaCost links are so deeply integrated into each subject; it’s just a giant mess right now and there’s still a lot of bad plumbing.

Your patronage is deeply appreciated for keeping this tremendous information source available for your health and well being, so please use the Puritan Pride search box at the bottom of each page in case you run into a bad link.

Thanks for your time.

Sincerely,

Randolph Directo, webmaster at bioenergeticspectrum.com

Synthesis and Catabolism of {gamma}-Hydroxybutyrate in SH-SY5Y Human Neuroblastoma Cells

ROLE OF THE ALDO-KETO REDUCTASE AKR7A2*

{gamma}-Hydroxybutyrate (GHB) is an endogenous metabolite synthesized in the brain. There is strong evidence to suggest that GHB has an important role as a neurotransmitter or neuromodulator.

The human aldo-keto reductase AKR7A2 has been proposed previously to catalyze the NADPH-dependent reduction of succinic semialdehyde (SSA) to GHB in human brain. In this study we have used RNA interference to evaluate the role of AKR7A2 in GHB biosynthesis in human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells. Quantitative reverse transcription-PCR analysis and immunoblotting revealed that short interfering RNA molecules directed against AKR7A2 led to a significant reduction in both AKR7A2 transcript and protein levels 72 h post-transfection.

We have shown that reduced expression of AKR7A2 results in a 90% decrease in SSA reductase activity of cell extracts. Furthermore, we have shown using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry that a decrease in the level of AKR7A2 was paralleled with a significant reduction in intracellular GHB concentration. This provides conclusive evidence that AKR7A2 is the major SSA reductase in these cells.

In contrast, short interfering RNA-dependent reduction in AKR7A2 levels had no effect on the GHB dehydrogenase activity of the extracts, and inhibitor studies suggest that another enzyme characteristic of an NAD-dependent alcohol dehydrogenase may be responsible for catalyzing this reverse reaction.

Together these findings delineate pathways for GHB metabolism in the brain and will enable a better understanding of the relationship between GHB biosynthesis and catabolism in disease states and in drug overdose.

Newly expanded poison spectrum

The site at Poison Spectrum has been expanded. The navi bar at the left provides new links about diabetes type 2 and natural solutions to addictions like crystal meth. Actually, there’s a lot of carry over from other sites which I’ve had, but I’ve never gone over the subject of supression of human bioenergetics in this section. The implications have always been obvious to me, but maybe not so obvious to others.

I know that there are pro-Leary types out there who believe that they expand their consciousness through the use of certain recreational drugs. This may be true, but you debilitate your body and your cognitive mental faculties in the process. Poison is poison. We weaken the overall human condition no matter which poison it is.

The problem is we live in an instant gratification culture - which is what make the web so popular. I admit it, myself. It’s so easy to find information, I don’t bother with the public library anymore. True, I still have a number of esoteric, hardcopy books in my posession - the kind that no public library will ever carry, but I discover a great deal of info on the web. The difference is that I test that info for accuracy.

By the same token, there are people into instant gratification of the senses, instant gratification of their pain, misery, and suffering with false euphoria - and this is the marketing strategy of the poison dealers: Instant Gratification.

I’d like to know what the visitors at this site really want which is one of the reasons I set up this blog. Let me know what pleases you, so I can find an instant gratification substitute for you that’s safe.

I would prefer to live in a society of people with good heads on their shoulders. As of late, I haven’t been getting that. What I have been getting are poison attitudes like road rage, neuroses, and nervousness. Then I end up working at Poison Spectrum as a kind of sublimation. What I really need is a punching bag.

WHO on tobacco and world health

The World Health Organization (WHO) says smoking and tobacco uses the world’s number one cause of preventable death.

One billion people will die from tobacco-related causes this century unless actions protecting public health and combating tobacco-company marketing are taken. This was the conclusion earlier this month of a global study on tobacco use by WHO. Dr. Margaret Chan, the Director-General of WHO, said countries will no longer be able to ignore the impact of tobacco use on public health.

One hundred million people died in the 20th century from tobacco-related causes. About five and a half million now die annually, one every six seconds. Nearly half the world’s children are exposed to pollution from second-hand smoke in their homes. Deaths are
rising exponentially as population grows and billions of dollars in marketing, banned in much of the developed world, are spent by tobacco companies to addict people in the less developed countries where 80% of deaths this century will occur.

Tobacco companies are also successfully targeting women and teens. Funding proven programs to change these trends would be cost-free to non-smokers, since governments already collect 500 times more in tobacco taxes than they spend on programs to reduce smoking and protect the non-smoking public,(therefore, governments are motivated more towards the money rather than to curb smokers or stop new nicotine habits from forming).

Since one of the most effective tools is raising tobacco taxes, substantial additional funds could be available, and as fewer people smoked, fewer public funds would be needed, also reducing health care and related economic costs totaling hundreds of billions of dollars per year. Higher taxes also reduce smoking among the most endangered group, the poor, who are made considerably more poor, hungry and at risk of disease by smoking, since addiction leads to a significant percentage of their income spent on tobacco.

A cost threshold is reached through taxation where poor and middle-income smokers are more likely to quit. Further, WHO tobacco expert Dr. Douglas Bettcher says nothing short of a total ban on smoking in public places and work places protects people from the dangers of second-hand smoke and helps convince smokers to quit.

In addition to effective monitoring of tobacco use world wide, WHO called for the following: Protecting people from tobacco smoke; offering help to quit tobacco use; warning people about the dangers of tobacco; enforcing bans on tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship; and raising taxes on tobacco. These are the same measures the U.S. Centers for Disease Control has reported are effective. Go to www.who.int for more
information.

Science of Peace needs one more presenter

It’s been a while since I’ve visited Gregg Braden’s site. Although relatively obscure to most, there is an organisation by the name of Science of Peace which has made a documentary on their investigations in the causes of violence, here is the excerpt from Gregg Braden’s site:

THE SCIENCE OF PEACE, hosted by LeVar Burton, investigates
the causes of violence and the pathways to peace from today’s leading scientists.

guests include: Gregg Braden, Dr. Bruce Lipton, Dean Radin, James O’Dea, Marilyn Schlitz, Hans-Peter Durr, Arun Gandhi, Rupert Sheldrake, Elisabet Sahtouris, Roger Nelson, Edgar Mitchell, Lynne McTaggart and Rolin McCraty.

For more information on this project please visit: www.scienceofpeace.com

Exerpt from the Science of Peace site:

“Our missions is threefold:

“To introduce cutting edge information and technology from leading scientists who are uncovering the real causes of conflict and the tools for peace

“To inspire, uplift, and enroll people to use these tools to claim sovereignty over their lives

“To actively engage large numbers of people from all over the world to unite in an unprecedented world peace experiment…”

The reason I place this under nutrition spectrum is because there is at least one more presenter for this movement who needs to be heard. If you have investigated my site at Nutrition Spectrum, then you may have come across a paper by Derrick Londsdale entitled, “A NEW MODEL FOR DISEASE: A PARADIGM SHIFT.” Here is an excerpt from this paper:

“Many of us, in the so-called developed part of the world, suffer unknowingly from the effects of high calorie malnutrition. The primitive part of the brain becomes irritable and the victim becomes more inappropriately emotional. Children have temper tantrums and may become violent and destructive. Adults become angry too easily and their emotional reactions are exaggerated. In short, we become more primitive in our reactions to the outside world….”

With an excerpt from my commentary:

Dr. Londsdale hits the nail on the head when he points out how malnutrition causes higher brain functions to revert back to the primitive limbic system.

I agree with his opinion on every detail concerning malnutrition leading to disease and aberrant behavior. In the city of East Palo Alto, California, there is now a curfew for teenagers under 18 in order to help curb gang violence. With the same money going into the law enforcement infrastructure to enforce that curfew, important essential nutrients could be distributed among families in this city. Who lives in East Palo Alto? Mostly Poor Black families.

Dr. Londsdale brings up these important issues in light of our decadent culture glorifying empty calories and prescription drugs rather than optimizing our health through natural nutrition. If you have read the paper on Mineralized Organic Super Foods, then you understand that our supermarket farmed food supply has steadily been losing essential nutrients over the decades due to super-efficient, corporate farming methods (super-efficient in the sense of growing more crops in extreme climates and depleted soils using GMO’s); this is the reason why most Americans are constantly hungry. We are constantly trying to replenish our bodies with important vitamins and minerals from a nutrient depleted food supply.

I recommend “A NEW MODEL FOR DISEASE: A PARADIGM SHIFT” as a reading for you in regards to the nutritional aspect of crux of the psychosocial problems facing humanity. I also recommend that Science of Peace adopt Dr. Londsdale’s model of human consciousness as a direct relation to human psychobiological requirements for the proper amounts essential nutrients.
